On April 30, Novartis announced plans to add a new facility in Morrisville, North Carolina, focused on active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing for solid dosage tablets, capsules and RNA therapeutics.
The company plans to invest an additional $220M in a new building at Pathway Triangle. This is in addition to the company’s announcement last November that committed $231M and over 100 jobs in Morrisville.
The new active pharmaceutical ingredient facility is a critical step to enable end-to-end manufacturing for the company’s advanced technology platforms in the U.S. The company expects to create more than 700 new jobs in Durham and Wake Counties by the end of 2030.
“We’re excited about this expansion, which highlights Wake County’s continued excellence in the life sciences sector,” said Chair Don Mial of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. “Companies like Novartis know that we have the skilled workforce they need to fill their new positions with talented, dedicated professionals who will take their business to the next level.”
The Triangle has over 650 life sciences companies that employ more than 58,000 individuals across the region, with an industry employment concentration more than 2.5 times the national average, enabling companies to scale across research, clinical development and manufacturing.
The company’s expanded scope in Morrisville reflects strong alignment between the company’s long-term needs and the town’s workforce access, proximity to major infrastructure and the ability to move projects forward.
“Novartis’s expansion in Morrisville shows what intentional planning and strong partnerships can deliver,” said TJ Cawley, Mayor of Morrisville. “By opening more than 400 acres for economic development and fostering a life sciences hub through modernized regulations and dedicated in-house economic development, we’ve created a place where world-class companies can thrive. Morrisville Means Business, and we remain committed to helping everyone Live Connected, Live Well.”
“This phase, focused on advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing builds on the foundation already planned at Pathway Triangle, developed by King Street Properties, and strengthens Morrisville’s position within the region’s life sciences landscape,” said Tiffany McNeill, Town of Morrisville Economic Development Director. “It reflects the type of investment the Town is working to support, where companies can establish, scale and remain in place over time.”
“Novartis’s expanded investment reinforces what companies continue to see in Wake County: a deep life sciences ecosystem, a strong talent pipeline and partners committed to helping projects move from concept to reality,” said Michael Haley, Executive Director of Wake County Economic Development. “This manufacturing facility adds strategic capacity to the region and will create high-quality jobs that strengthen our economy for years to come.”
