General Motors announces assembly project, from Mexico for Mexico, to meet local demand

Toluca, State of Mexico, May 19, 2026 — With the presence of Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, and Mr. Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, Secretary of Economy, General Motors of Mexico today announced a new project to assemble vehicles at its manufacturing complex located in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila. These vehicles are intended to meet the demand of the Mexican market, beginning with the Chevrolet Groove in 2027 and, in a subsequent phase, the Chevrolet Aveo, one of the best-selling vehicles in Mexico.

  • It will focus on vehicle assembly to compete in the highest volume segments of the Mexican market.

  • This project is part of the $1 billion investment announced in January 2026 to strengthen the company's operations in the country.

This project reaffirms GM's long-term commitment to Mexico and seeks to contribute to maintaining the company's strong market position. This project is part of the $1 billion investment announced in January 2026 for the company's operations in Mexico and will reach an approximate capacity of 80,000 units per year by 2030.

“This is a project conceived in Mexico, for Mexico. It strengthens the national industry, leverages our country's installed capacity, and directly addresses the current needs of Mexican customers, especially in affordable and high-volume segments,” commented Paco Garza, President and CEO of GM Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. “With these 80,000 units per year alone, GM Mexico will contribute to exceeding the goal of the Mexico Plan, promoted by President Sheinbaum, to increase vehicle production for the domestic market by 10% by 2030.”

The project will utilize the existing infrastructure and the expertise of the Ramos Arizpe Complex, a plant with a solid track record of operational excellence and technical capability. General Motors of Mexico also acknowledged the leadership and support of the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, whose participation was fundamental in bringing this project to fruition, a project that strengthens the country's industrial capacity and reduces vehicle imports. General Motors has been present in Mexico for over 90 years. It has four manufacturing plants in the country and maintains a strategic role within GM's global flexible production platform.
