Ebrard says that Mexico is seeking “new opportunities” with Canada ahead of the USMCA review

This Thursday, May 7, 2026, Mexico's Economy Secretary, Marcelo Ebrard, stated that Mexico is seeking “new opportunities” with Canada amid reviews of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Ebrard Casaubon began a two-day visit to Canada in Toronto, accompanied by more than 240 Mexican companies from sectors such as agribusiness, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electromobility, creative industries, education, and patent acceleration, among others. They are holding more than 1,000 business-to-business (B2B) meetings with Canadian companies to expand bilateral trade and discuss the USMCA review with the Canadian government. Ottawa indicated that the review will be “robust” but offers “great opportunities.”

Mexico and the United States agree on the first round of USMCA negotiations for the end of May.

Mexico seeks "new opportunities" with Canada in the short and long term.

At an event held this Thursday, which was also attended by the Canadian Minister for Trade Relations with the United States, Dominic LeBlanc, Ebrard stated that Mexico is seeking "new opportunities" with Canada not only for this year, but "for the next 20 or 50 years" in a world that, he said, is changing rapidly "geopolitically and technologically," as well as in the way companies operate.

"We are looking for new possibilities in a world that changes every day. What to do in the face of uncertainty? By opening new opportunities, trying to be close to friends, close to reliable partners, close to other opportunities in the market," said Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

The Secretary of Economy added that "that is why we are here. We are going to maintain this effort; this is not an event, it is a process. It is starting in our country, as well as in Canada."

For his part, Minister LeBlanc recalled that President Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Carney announced a new strategic alliance between Canada and Mexico in 2025 through the Action Plan.

“Marcelo and I discussed it last night—(the Action Plan) is a roadmap to identify key priorities and guide the strategic actions of both governments,” LeBlanc stated. “The potential is enormous. Canada is deeply committed to expanding its economic opportunities with our Mexican partners,” he added.
