LEGO Group's $400m Mexico Expansion to Create 1,300 Jobs

September, 24, 2026. The LEGO Group has announced plans to invest more than US$400m in its Monterrey, Mexico factory, aiming to strengthen its manufacturing footprint in the Americas. The investment will include a new packing hall and fully automated high bay warehouse. Construction of the new production facilities is expected to begin in early 2027 and be completed by 2029. Alongside this improved capacity, LEGO Group will create an additional 1,300 jobs to manage its new packing and warehousing operations. Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operating Officer at the LEGO Group, says: “The LEGO Group has steadily expanded its Monterrey factory since its opening in 2008, reflecting our long standing commitment to Mexico and the important role the site plays in our global manufacturing network," “This latest investment positions us for continued long-term growth and will help us meet demand for LEGO play experiences for years to come.” Since opening in 2008, the Monterrey factory has overseen all aspects of the manufacturing and packaging of LEGO products, including moulding LEGO elements, element processing and decoration and packing boxes. According to the company, the US$400m investment will support a 62,000 square-metre expansion to increase total production by 35%. Currently, the factory is 148,080 square-metres, meaning the investment will expand it to a total of 210,080 square metres. Upon its official launch in 2008, the factory in Monterrey held 800 employees and gradual expansion grew its workforce to 7,300 in 2026. Nancy Sánchez, General Manager of LEGO factory Monterrey and Senior Vice President of Americas Manufacturing at the LEGO Group, adds: “The skilled workforce available in Monterrey has helped support the growth of our operations for nearly two decades. This investment will create additional opportunities for technical training, professional development and long-term careers at the site." The LEGO Group’s latest investment joins a host of investments across North America, scaling its manufacturing footprint throughout the continent. In 2023, the company announced plans to increase its Monterrey facility by 59,000 square-metres, with an additional 900 employees expected to be added over the course of the expansion. This was completed in 2026, expanding an existing warehouse and adding a new packing facility. The company added further capabilities around the moulding of LEGO DUPLO and LEGO System bricks, DUPLO processing and DUPLO & LEGO packing, while increasing its production line tally from 51 to 68. Away from Monterrey, the LEGO Group is investing more than US$1.5bn to build a factory and regional distribution centre in Virginia, US. This funding aims to add greater flexibility and resilience to its Americas manufacturing footprint. According to the LEGO Group, both facilities are on track to open in 2027. The LEGO Group’s manufacturing process requires intricate technology as each brick is moulded to the accuracy of a hair’s width to ensure the perfect ‘clutch power’ that holds LEGO creations together. While LEGO leverages advanced technology to achieve the high precision required for moulding its intricate bricks, it also integrates automated systems across its warehousing facilities to streamline sorting, packing and logistics operations.
