Following Mexico's ratification, the United Kingdom's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) will enter into force on June 22, 2026.
Trade and investment between the two countries are expected to expand under this agreement, resulting from the liberalization of goods and the accumulation of rules of origin.
The Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs report that, following Mexico's ratification, the United Kingdom's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) entered into force on June 22, allowing both countries to apply the agreement's provisions to each other.
The CPTPP is a trade agreement that includes 12 countries from the Americas, Asia, Oceania, and Europe: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and now, the United Kingdom. Mexico is a founding member of the CPTPP, which has been in effect in our country since December 30, 2018. With the entry into force of the United Kingdom's accession, both countries will be able to benefit from the provisions of the agreement, which will strengthen the bilateral economic relationship.
Currently, trade is characterized by flows of high value-added goods such as machinery and industrial equipment, as well as vehicles and auto parts. Under the CPTPP, industrial and agri-food products will be duty-free between Mexico and the United Kingdom, which will allow for increased trade expansion. Furthermore, through the rules of origin, the CPTPP can expand the participation of Mexico and the United Kingdom in our respective value chains. It will also support the strengthening of priority sectors of the Mexico Plan, such as automotive, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals, by promoting investment in Mexico and technology transfer to increase production.
In an international context marked by the reconfiguration of supply chains and the search for more diversified markets, the entry into force of the United Kingdom's accession to the CPTPP strengthens Mexico's position as a global trade and investment platform and contributes to strengthening economic ties with Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas through a common framework of trade rules. The CPTPP places Mexico and the United Kingdom in a new sphere of economic cooperation, which will allow for the expansion of trade and investment between the two countries, which, in 2025 alone, reached US$6.293 billion.
