Nvidia NVDA CEO Jensen Huang said AI could help revive U.S. manufacturing, but warned America needs far more energy production to stay ahead in the global AI race.
Speaking in Texas at the expansion of a Coherent facility, Huang called AI factories the infrastructure of the new industrial revolution. The site is being expanded through a $2 billion Nvidia and Coherent partnership and produces indium phosphide, a material used in lasers that move data between chips. Coherent says the project will create about 1,000 jobs, double floor space and quadruple output.
Huang said AI can bring production back to the U.S. by combining advanced factories with smarter software, supply chains and domestic infrastructure. But he also warned the country is woefully behind in energy production, as AI data centers require massive amounts of electricity. Coherent said its technology can reduce power consumption by as much as 50%.
